What is Pokemon Emerald Extended Cut?

Pokemon Emerald Extended Cut is a romhack based on Pokemon Emerald that adds the Johto, Kanto and the Sevii Islands into the game. Being a semi-open world hack, it gives you the chance to explore each region in any order you like. Along with that, it also adds 30+ new cities, 70+ new routes and 45+ new dungeons.

Many older places and tiles, especially in Johto and Kanto, have been redesigned to give a fresh look. While exploring Hoenn might feel mostly the same, major changes were made in Kanto and Johto which completely change the way you explore regions you’ve already played before. Team Rocket even makes some appearances in Hoenn along with Team Aqua and Team Magma.

Random trainer battles in Johto, Kanto and Sevii have been drastically reduced to make exploration easier with fewer forced battles. Only major boss fights are kept, like gym leaders, the Elite Four, and a few notable trainers. Most random trainers have been removed.

Overall, the game is designed to give you the chance to explore Hoenn, Johto, Kanto and the Sevii Islands in a single game and a single playthrough with ease.

The gameplay is mostly like the traditional games with no major changes or QoL features. Everything remains classic: no infinite TMs, HMs need to be taught and can’t be deleted, and so on. The game stays faithful to the original style but with expanded regions and an expanded Pokedex.

Full Features

Gotta Catch ‘Em All:
All 386 Pokemon from Generation 1 to 3 can now be caught in their natural habitats! At the moment, the Pokedex has 489 Pokemon compared to the original 386, and it’s still expanding.

New Starters:
The traditional starters have been replaced with different Pokéemon. I’m not gonna spoil it — just play the game and find out.

24 Gym Battles:
All gym leaders across Hoenn, Johto and Kanto are included, so you’ll battle a total of 24 gym leaders. And further story events in the Sevii Islands are also waiting for you.

3 Pokemon League Championships:
The Hoenn League, Johto League and Kanto League are all present, and you’ll have to beat all of them to become the biggest champion.

Improved Town Map:
The town map now shows a full continent instead of just a single region. The continent includes all cities from all regions in one huge map.

Improved Towns and Tiles:
Major changes were made in Kanto, Johto and Sevii. Each town and city has been redesigned to give players a fresh experience. New tiles were used for homes, buildings, gyms and interiors. Towns were rebuilt to look more lively and updated.

Trainer Battles Removed:
Random NPC trainer battles in Johto, Kanto and Sevii have been removed, although random trainers in Hoenn are still there like the original game.

30+ New Cities, 70+ New Routes and 45+ New Dungeons:
The game adds many new cities, routes and dungeons to make the world even more exciting. In total: 30+ new cities, 70+ new routes and 45+ new dungeons.

Following Pokemon:
The game includes a following Pokemon feature so your lead Pokemon always walks behind you on your adventure. Exploring such a large world feels much better with your Pokemon by your side.

Being a Gym Leader:
After beating the Hoenn League, you get the chance to become a gym leader instead of your dad. Your dad gets promoted to the Elite Four, and you take over the gym. Whenever you want, you can go to your gym and accept challengers.

Team Rocket Appearances:
Team Rocket now appears in Hoenn and other regions as well, so you’ll deal with multiple villain teams — Aqua, Magma and Rocket — at the same time.

Champion is Replaced:
The traditional Emerald champion, Wallace, is replaced with someone more popular (not gonna spoil it — play and see).

And Much More:
There are a lot of small changes and hidden features throughout the game. We’ve only listed some highlights here, and you’ll discover even more while playing.

Future Plans:

The current game is fully developed in vanilla, and the future plan is to port it to the pokeemerald expansion to improve it overall, since pokeemerald supports many modern QoL features and improvements that make the game more enjoyable.

Current Progress:

The current version is fully beatable but is not the final version. Future updates will add major changes and new content.

Credits

  • Pret team for decompiling Pokemon Emerald
  • CAulin for making Pokemon Atlas Emerald, a Binary Hack that I used as a base.
  • I played the v0.9yi version, it was very close to what I would have imagined as a perfect Hack of Emerald, but with all due respect I was not personally enthusiastic about many artistic solutions and not taken by the author, so I started on a personal level to modify a thing here, a thing there, until the two works began to be very different and the idea of publishing my work began to tickle me.
  • Sierraffinity for making Pokemon Crystal Dust, from which I borrowed a lot of music as placeholders
  • WiserVisor for making following pokemon plugin
  • Special thanks to Nicolavs Aquae from Team Aqua Hideout for helping me along the way, without him none of this would be possible
